Intrigue is age-old part of Vatican politics. Analysis by Cathy Lynn Grossman

The Vatican today appears rocked by scandalous rumors and resignations just as church leaders must gear up to replace frail Pope Benedict XVI within weeks.

But Vatican experts say if you think the world's largest non-governmental institution is in unprecedented chaos right now, think again.

"Have you ever heard of the Borgias?" quips professor Terrence Tilley, chairman of the theology department for Fordham University, New York. They were the larcenous, adulterous, murderous, election-rigging, Renaissance-era family of renaissance popes "who ran the papacy for decades like a private fief."

For all the sex, money and power headlines wafting out of Rome these days, at least no one has been murdered. Infighting and innuendo, though, are ancient traditions that have moved into the bright lights of the 24/7 news cycle social media.

It's long been known that sugar-sweetened drinks raise a person's risk of Type 2 diabetes. But now, a new study from French researchers at Inserm suggests sugar-free diet drinks could also play a role.

The research, to be published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, shows an association between consumption of "light" or diet soda and increased risk of Type 2 diabetes.

What Jesus said about Justification. By Morris Venden

Morris Venden, shown here on TV in Walla Walla, Washington, in 2003, helped bring a renewed perspective on salvation through grace to the Seventh-day Adventist Church starting in the 1970s. He died Sunday at age 80. ANN
And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted" (Luke 18:9-14).

Two men went to the Temple to pray. One man prayed to himself, the other prayed to God. One man worshiped himself; the other worshiped God. One trusted to his own merits; the other to the mercy of God.

The Lovely Hill: Where People Live Longer and Happier. By Emily Esfahani Smith

In one idyllic community in southern California, Adventists live 4 to 7 years longer -- and more healthily and happily -- than the rest of the country. A look at their diet, lifestyle, and philosophy

Ellsworth Wareham, 98, in Loma Linda, Calif. Mr. Wareham was a heart surgeon who stopped working only three years ago. He is a vegan, but says choice is part of the “great American system.”

When Ellsworth Wareham was in his nineties, he decided that his house in Loma Linda, California -- a beautiful city 60 miles east of Los Angeles, Spanish for "lovely hill" -- needed a new fence. But rather than hire a contractor to install the wood fence, as most nonagenarians would no doubt do, Wareham went to the hardware store, bought the supplies he needed, and returned to dig some post holes. As Dan Buettner recounts in his book Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who've Lived the Longest, Wareham proceeded to put the wood fence up himself.

A few days later, Wareham was in the hospital -- performing open-heart surgery on a patient.
