Ellen G. White statements related to the observance of Christmas and holiday gifts

Christmas is Coming

"Christmas is coming," is the note that is sounded throughout our world from east to west and from north to south. With youth, those of mature age, and even the aged, it is a period of general rejoicing, of great gladness. But what is Christmas, that it should demand so much attention? This day has been made much of for centuries. It is accepted by the unbelieving world, and by the Christian world generally, as the day on which Christ was born. When the world at large celebrates the day, they show no honor to Christ. They refuse to acknowledge Him as their Saviour, to honor Him by willing obedience to His service. They show preference to the day, but none to the one for whom the day is celebrated, Jesus Christ.

Christians & Christmas. By Angel Manuel Rodríguez

QUESTION: Should Adventists celebrate Christmas?

Every year I receive letters or phone calls asking whether it is correct for Adventists to celebrate Christmas. The uncertainty is usually based on the absence of any biblical information about the date of Christ’s birth, and on the conviction that December 25 has been associated with a pagan festival. Let me provide some historical information about the celebration of Christmas and say something about its significance.

Chris Picco, a professional recording artist who leads university chapel song services, tenderly sang Paul McCartney’s “Blackbird” on his guitar at the bedside of his 4-day-old son, Lennon James, on November 11, hours before the boy died in his father’s arms.

His wife, Ashley, 30, died following an emergency Caesarean section to deliver the baby, who was born 16 weeks early, at the Loma Linda University Children's Hospital.

The Pope on evolution. By Lita Cosner

Roman Catholics consider Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio, b. 1936) to be the successor to the Apostle Peter, and therefore having authority over Christians worldwide. Protestant creationists today have another reason to be glad that we reject this error.

Titanic! By Clifford Goldstein

Benny Beeman told the story like this: In 1912, he was coming over on a ship to America. He was a child, about 10 years old, leaving the Old World, where life for Jews wasn’t so good. He was heading for the New World, where he and his family hoped it would be better.

Halloween History and the Bible. By Bodie Hodge

In the United States (and other countries), Halloween has become one of the most popular unofficial holidays. On the up side, retail sales boost the economy around this holiday.1

On the down side, the holiday has become a time of increased crime in many places (especially arson and other acts of violence) on Halloween night as well as the night before. Even the author’s house was robbed one Halloween by forced entry. So, although the retail industry loves Halloween, many police officers and insurance companies dread it! Of course, there is also a tremendous amount of occult activity associated with this holiday.

Top 10 media manipulation strategies. By Noam Chomsky

Renowned critic and always MIT linguist Noam Chomsky, one of the classic voices of intellectual dissent in the last decade, has compiled a list of the ten most common and effective strategies resorted to by the agendas “hidden” to establish a manipulation of the population through the media.

Historically the media have proven highly efficient to mold public opinion. Thanks to the media paraphernalia and propaganda, have been created or destroyed social movements, justified wars, tempered financial crisis, spurred on some other ideological currents, and even given the phenomenon of media as producers of reality within the collective psyche.

Halloween and Seventh-day Adventists. By Gerhard Pfandl

Each year on October 31, millions of people celebrate Halloween by dressing up as witches, devils, and demons. Besides parties for adults, the day has become an occasion for children to go from house to house, often in costumes, demanding “trick or treat.”

The FDA Says Farmers Are Giving Animals Too Many Antibiotics

Overuse of the drugs has increased over the past few years. That's not good for human health.

A piece of bad news from the Food and Drug Administration: In the war against antibiotic overuse, the antibiotics are winning.

The amount of antibiotics given to farm animals in the United States increased by 16 percent between 2009 and 2012, the agency announced in a new report, and nearly 70 percent of those used are considered “medically important” for humans. That’s trouble for us as much as it is for our four-legged friends, who consume the majority of antibiotics in the U.S.—as much as 80 percent are given to the chickens, pigs, and cows bound for our grocery-store shelves, both to spur more rapid growth and to proactively protect them from disease.

The 11 Most Compelling 9/11 Conspiracy Theories

Many 9/11 conspiracy theories surfaced shortly after the September 11th attacks, some bringing compelling arguments, and some not holding up at all. Theorists believe that the World Trade Center buildings were demolished by bombs, phone calls from the planes were made up, and the former President George W. Bush secretly profited from the attacks.

I have compiled a list of the 11 most compelling 9/11 conspiracy theories that exist:

What Seventh-Day Adventists Get Right That Lengthens Their Life Expectancy. By Ryan Buxton

Members Of This Religion Live 10 Years Longer Than Most Americans

(Huffington Post) Statistics have shown that religion makes people happier, but it turns out it can help you live longer, too.

In an attempt to "reverse engineer longevity," Dan Buettner has spent years researching the parts of the world where people live much longer than average. Most of those locations are outside the United States -- including Sardinia, Italy, and Okinawa, Japan -- but there is one long-living group stateside. It's the Seventh-day Adventists, who live an average of 10 years longer than the American life expectancy of about 79 years.

God’s Mighty Right Arm Saving Body and Soul. By Ted N. C. Wilson

Saving Body and Soul

We are living in the time of the end. Many people around the world are realizing that things are changing rapidly and that the future is uncertain. As we prepare for the soon coming of Jesus, it is more important than ever that we refocus on our unique, heaven-born mandate of medical missionary work, or as we are now calling it: “comprehensive health ministry”—utilizing the health message in every way possible to bring people to the cross of the Master Physician.

How America's Great University System Is Being Destroyed, By Noam Chomsky

Faculty are increasingly hired on the Walmart model as temps.

On hiring faculty off the tenure track

That’s part of the business model. It’s the same as hiring temps in industry or what they call “associates” at Wal-Mart, employees that aren’t owed benefits. It’s a part of a corporate business model designed to reduce labor costs and to increase labor servility.

Vegetarians May Be The Best Weapon Against One of Our Generation's Biggest Threats. By Matt Connolly

Want to address climate change, but don't trust governments to take on the problem? You have one option that may help: Go vegetarian.

A new study published in the journal Climatic Change determined the difference in greenhouse gas emissions from 55,000 meat eaters, fish eaters, vegetarians and vegans in the United Kingdom. Vegetarians accounted for much less CO2 than meat eaters, while vegans did even better: They accounted for half the emissions that meat eaters did.

In a 5-4 decision, the court today ruled that “closely held” companies can opt out of federal healthcare mandates to provide contraceptive coverage to employees based on religious liberty.

The Divine Teacher. By Carlos A. Steger

• Introduction: Adult Sabbath School Bible Study Guide│3rd. Quarter 2014

Most of us probably remember a great teacher who made an impact on our lives, whom we admired and appreciated. Some teachers transcend their own times and continue to influence subsequent generations. Outstanding teachers have decisively impacted life and thought and are often universally recognized. Jesus, of course, was the greatest Teacher of all.

His contemporaries acknowledged Him as a Teacher, for He exhibited the general characteristics of a first-century rabbi. As was the practice, He would sit down to teach. He often quoted the Scriptures and then commented on them. Finally, Jesus had a group of disciples who attentively listened to His words and followed and served Him. These were the basic attributes of teachers in His time and place.

The Campaign for Junk Food. By Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama on Attempts to Roll Back Healthy Reforms

WHEN we began our Let’s Move! initiative four years ago, we set one simple but ambitious goal: to end the epidemic of childhood obesity in a generation so that kids born today will grow up healthy.

To achieve this goal, we have adhered to one clear standard: what works. The initiatives we undertake are evidence-based, and we rely on the most current science. Research indicated that kids needed less sugar, salt and fat in their diets, so we revamped school lunch menus accordingly. When data showed that the lack of nearby grocery stores negatively affected people’s eating habits, we worked to get more fresh-food retailers into underserved areas. Studies on habit formation in young children drove our efforts to get healthier food and more physical activity into child care centers.
